How-to Skuld wings(Artbook version)...and the process of how we made it Part 1

So this is my first tutorial so please bare with me. There is a total of 29 or so pictures. Pictures are taken by my boyfriend who is also my prop maker. If you guys have ever met me in person, he is usually with me since I have the bad habit of not remembering the wings are over 6+ feet wide and I poke people with them.

If you ever do see me, please come say hi :) I'm semi-bad at remembering names but I get so happy meeting people who likes my cosplay work.

Alright! Here we go! I will post the picture, then info that my boyfriend wrote(whether or not its useful/funny), and then info that I will add on top of it. This will be a VERY long blog post. I will also try to post this on my facebook page in the photo album.

IMPORTANT: Some of the materials needed to make these wings will require an adult present or an adult doing that step. I DO NOT WANT YOU TO GET HURT. So please be careful if you attempt at making this.

Commentary by my boyfriend: This is how it all started... humble card board...
Info by Trang: Materials needed: 30x30(?) cardboard. 3 Poster board. 4-5 32x18 foam core boards. A ton of craft foam and 1.5 inches, 1.75 inches, 2.25 inches buttons. Heat gun if u have one. I think u can use a hair dryer too if you dont have a heat gun. But heat gun will be much better. Epoxy putty for plastic. Fiber Glass. 6-8 cans of gold spray paint. 1 can of silver spray paint. 1 3/16th steel rods. Hand torch. Dremel w/ diamond reinforce cut. Acrylic sheet.

Commentary by my boyfriend: Before actually starting on anything I spend a good 2 weeks mentally planning how I wanted to construct these enormous wings. With the help of photoshop I used this image to scale all of my measurements. My plan is to make the frame tiered so that the feathers can sit at different depths giving it more of a 3d-ish effect.
Info by Trang: I honestly dont know what to add on more. I had sent him the picture picture of this I could find. Since I dont know how he did the math to scale it to me. If u want to know, I can ask him. Let me know in the comments.

Commentary by my boyfriend: I had my gf lay on the cardboard and sketched out the frame for the wings. Keeping it as close as I could to my planned measurements.
Info by Trang: He really did make me lay on this. This was positions about 5-7 inches down starting from my shoulders. My height is able 5'4 or 5'5.
Commentary by my boyfriend: Here, I'm refining the shape of the frame and making sure all of the feathers will eventually fit by laying down buttons. These buttons will serve as the detail pieces for the feathers.
Info by Trang: Again. Nothing to add here.

Commentary by my boyfriend: My first problem. The large buttons are TOO large. I figured this would happen since the buttons I got were way off scale from the picture. I thought I could fudge it a little but I couldnt. It was sloppy of me but I had trouble finding the sizes I needed :(
Info by Trang: Again. Nothing to add here.

Commentary by my boyfriend: I begin cutting out the tiers for the frame.
Info by Trang: 2nd tier is 1.75 inches bigger than the 1st tier. 2.25 inches bigger than the 2nd tier.

Commentary by my boyfriend: I realized the the "medium" sized buttons were almost the perfect dimensions to be moved to the outside and become the "large" buttons
Info by Trang:

Commentary by my boyfriend: Miley Cyrus saves the day. I'll never badmouth her again. These buttons are 1.75 in in diameter and serve perfectly as the new "medium" sized buttons.
Info by Trang:

Commentary by my boyfriend:
Info by Trang: Test Stencil

Commentary by my boyfriend: Stencil for EVERYTHING!!!11one!
Info by Trang: There are 13 Stencil in the picture here. He made a stencil for everything to make sure everything was cut right. Each tier of feathers had 10 stencils. So just for feathers, there were about 30 stencils total. Each layer base had a stencil.

Commentary by my boyfriend: After cutting out a feather I added curvature with a bit of heat
Info by Trang: He had made this test feather curve using a heat gun. Put it under the heat gun for about 15-20 seconds. Then hold that curve you want until it cools down.

I will finish this later...there will probably be 1-2 more parts. Hopefully just 1.
Please let me know what you all think in the comments :)

Duct tape anyone?

So about two days ago(sunday night/Monday morning) at 1am, I told my boyfriend I wanted to start making my dress form. Now I had watched a lot of video on making a duct tape dress form. It was an interesting experience. Most of the videos I watch, no one said how long the process can take.

Keep in mind that at one point, my bf and I kept on laughing because I fell over. Literally. Lol. I stuffed the inside with newspaper. LOTS of newspaper. I found it a bit tricky on trying to get it to stand up so I took some of my brother's weights that he isn't using anymore to make it stand. I saw in couple other videos that u can use a tree stand or a hanger. I didn't want to use a hanger since I was afraid it might make a crease in the shoulders. Stuffing took me about 30min-1 hour with the help of my nephew and niece.
(Dont pay attention to the food next to it in the picture...its 1/2 of my dinner for tonight)
Materials: 1 1/2 rolls of duct tape(each roll of duct tape was 55yds), a stick I bought at lowes, a t-shirt I do not want(doesnt matter if the shirt is too big on u to do this dress form. I used an XL shirt and I'm a size small), a friend/family member who is comfortable seeing u pretty close to nude, lots of patience, newspaper/polyfiber stuffing/a lot fabric you dont need to stuff the inside
Time Duration: 2 hours to put on about 2-3 layers of duct tape all over, 1 hour to stuff the inside
Total time spent: 3 hours (give or take some minutes)

Yesterday, I went to a prescreening of Gangster Squad at the Edwards Marqe with my bf and my two friend. Pretty awesome movie. There is one more prescreening of Gangster Squad on Thursday. Not sure if I will go again. We will see.

If you have any questions about the duct tape dress form, just comment on the post and I'll let u know. Again dont forget to like my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/TrangHuynh018

2013, here I come!

Happy New Year!
Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!

Well let me just first say that the last couple hours before midnight of new years day was a bit rough but overall, I'm still happy. I didnt get my new year's kiss until 2am I think. Oh I got a new tea cup. I forgot to take a picture of it. I will later on.

I told myself that I would start my cosplay this month and I will. I first have to make a dress form. I looked a up a couple videos and decided to do a duct tape form. I will be doing that next week and will post a couple pictures from it. Just a reminder, I plan on cosplaying as Skuld from Oh my goddess. The series come out as a 5 episode show and then a couple years later got remade into a 26 episode(season 1) show and also renamed as "Ah! my goddess". Which back then people would sometimes get confused if it was really "Oh! my goddess" or "Ah! my goddess". (I was one of those people who got confused when I would look for pics) Here is a picture of which outfit I plan on doing :)

The wings will be done by my boyfriend. This is the first time he will be helping me make something on my cosplay. Pretty excited and I hope it turns out well =D I havent decided if I'm going to enter the cosplay contest or the world cosplay summit contest at Anime Matsuri. It would be my first time entering a cosplay contest of any kind. I would be too nervous on stage.

One last thing:
If you like movies like me, the Houston Film Critics Society is hosting a free gala to hand out awards to some movies. Here is a link for more info about it. I might or might not go, not sure yet. I'll post pics if I go.

Did anyone go to Ikkicon this past weekend? Got any pictures to share? Comment on this post and let me see! :)
